This 600-hour course is designed to prepare a licensed cosmetologist to teach all phases of the basic cosmetology curriculum in a licensed school. Applicants must have an active cosmetology license to enter this training program.

Instructor Program Overview

The program covers theoretical concepts while emphasizing hands-on experience through practical clinical procedures. Students first assist a licensed instructor in the classroom and then complete 130 hours of practice teaching.

 

In addition, students are taught essential employability skills, receive a comprehensive review of the cosmetology curriculum, and are fully prepared to take the state licensing examination for cosmetology instructors.

Career Insights for Instructor

To qualify as a cosmetology instructor, individuals must pass the state practical and written examinations before being issued a license.

 

The role requires standing for most of the workday, working hands-on while giving practical demonstrations, and having no allergies to the chemicals used in the profession. Instructors are also responsible for planning lessons, grading and counseling students, and must communicate effectively while maintaining positive working relationships with others.

Work Settings for Instructor

Cosmetology instructors may work in schools that teach cosmetology, nail technology, and esthetics, including proprietary, vocational, and technical schools.

 

Employment opportunities can be either full-time or part-time, and earnings typically increase with experience while varying by region across the country.
